My caring journey began when my husband was diagnosed with kidney failure. At that point my life would no longer be the same.
Over the past ten years I have provided psychotherapy services to others, by helping them get through difficult times and struggles with various problems and one being a caregiver. NOW IT'S MY TURN!
You see for the past five years, my husband has been faced with many health challenges besides renal failure, he also had open heart surgery and the latest diagnosis was getting a leg amputatation. All these health complications are from having Type 2 diabetes, and my biggest transition was learning to cook healthy foods geared for diabetic and renal failure persons. Whew! helping him to change old eating habits after his diagnosis of kideney failure was truly a battle, but a good thing happened, this adjustment helped me to eat more healthier.
Despite of my caregiving responsibilities, I am currently working on my PhD in a Counseling Studies Specialization to further enhance my skills when working with individuals and families who provide long-term care.
How I yearned for someone to talk to. Someone who could understand my feelings, and what I have gone through as a middle-age caregiver. Someone to help me balance caregiving and work to avoid burnout. Friends and family try to be supportive, but they don't fully understand. And friends who were caregivers have placed their loved one's in a care facility, and no longer have the responsibility as a caregiver. These friends share stories that are not often comforting or consoling, because their caregiving was based on their experience.
I have made it my life's work to help other caregivers balance taking care of themselves inspite of their hectic lifestyle as their Caregiver Coach and Life Coach.
